It has been a while since Verizon started to invest in the LTE technology and it’s well known that they are testing it in various locations. The release is set for next year and Verizon hopes to launch it “as close to all-at-once if possible”, according to its CTO – Tony Melone.

There are 30 locations planned to get LTE working next year, following all the current CDMA locations within 3 years. The secret of this fast implementation is using a part of the existing CDMA network, the leap to LTE being much smaller than the one from GSM to CDMA.

In fact the current CDMA is fully compatible with LTE, so you will not need a new handset to continue using the current 3G services through the recently updated network but you will probably be tempted to purchase a new 4G compatible device when you’ll hear about the speed this technology offers.
