There’s even a term for the new phone, since Samsung SPH-M8400 sports WiBro, Wi-Fi and WCDMA, all of these gathered under the umbrella of the “3W” name. Such a type of connectivity insures full 3G and 4G support, but only in South Korea, since WiBro is available over there alone.

The same paper claims that KT’s Samsung Prism will be a tri-mode Windows Mobile phone, operating on the local WiMAX network and also supporting WCDMA and Wi-Fi.

What’s more surprising is that the device might be available in 2009, so translating this to the US market, this means that we might be seeing a similar launch via a Sprint and Samsung cooperation in 2010, let’s say Q1?

In case you didn’t know, in spite of being a very technologically evolved society, South Korea still applies policies that require the presence of a custom software layer in order for the user to connect to data services.

This layer gave local companies Samsung and LG a monopoly over the local market and very little room for competition from the foreign handset makers. However, restrictions have been loosened lately, so local carriers must be rubbing their hands impatiently waiting to have the iPhone in their grasp.

There’s still a “technical ban” keeping Apple’s handset at bay, but we guess that KT will manage to score the iPhone till the year end. What do you think?
